THQ Files for Chapter 11

It's actually not the worst news, although it could be a hell of a lot better.

As of late THQ seems to have been making the rounds as a company doing a lot to get its games into the hands of anyone that would like them. From offering a Humble Bundle, to just giving away Metro 2033 for free. Whether or not these efforts will make people remember the business is still up for debate. Unfortunately though even with the successes they've had, it hasn't been enough to stop the company from filing for a Chapter 11, which is a form of bankruptcy.

Now, before people fly off the handle and wonder what will happen to the various franchises that THQ has under their roof don't have to worry. Chapter 11 isn't a complete solvency type of bankruptcy. Rather, the company has a chance to get itself out of this situation that it has found itself in.

Basically the details that most gamers will be interested in are as follows:

"All of the company’s studios remain open, and all development teams continue, the company said. "The company remains confident in its existing pipeline of games. THQ maintains relationships with some of the top independent development studios around the globe. As part of the sale, the company is seeking approval to assume the contracts of these studios, and Clearlake will assume these contracts."

The next few months will doubtless be essential to see if THQ can turn things around. Every release is likely going to take on a greater importance. At this point the company can't really afford to take gambles, which sadly means that everything but the strongest of their franchises will likely be put on the back-shelf for the moment.

Of course, all of this does assume that the court will grant THQ the ability to proceed, which hasn't been guaranteed yet. At this point there's no reason to think that it won't be granted, but it's not completely impossible. Still, this is a case where I'd actually rather be optimistic than not.
